The Petzl Zipka 2 Plus
Petzl has been on top of the headlamp game for three decades and this little gem from their super compact line is a marvel of industrial engineering. It's been winning Gear-Review awards left and right. Just under 2.5 ounces loaded with three AAA batteries, and incorporating a self-retracting headband, this is a piece of gear that you have no excuse NOT to carry. Toss it in your kit or carry it in your pocket, and it will sit there compactly until you need it to light your path or signal your presence. It has white and red illumination, with your choice of high, low, or flashing modes. It will give you 140 hours of useful light, though batteries should ideally be replaced after 30 hours when the visibly begins to fall below 30 feet. The initial visability is around 100 feet. It's spashproof, rugged, and the rectractable headband really does work, even if you are attaching the lamp to something larger or smaller than the human head; it gives just the right amount of pressure throughout it's entire size range. It will stay on your head as you run or go over bumps on a bike. It's only shortcoming is that the headband doesn't work so well at temperatures below -20*F, which won't be an issue for most people. Petzl makes some sweet accessories for it, such as a USB compatible lithium battery pack with 3x the run life, and special mounts for every application, including helmet mounts, webbing clips, and traditional head-bands. We are so confident in this unit that we will replace it for free if it breaks within the first three years of service.
